The Direct Socket Below the Knee Amputation Method

A prosthetic socket is built directly on the patient's limb using glass fibre, resin and a hardener, creating a precise fit instantly — so patients can start walking and rehabilitating​ within hours instead of weeks.

A Southeast Asian First in Prosthetic Innovation

SGH is the first institution in Southeast Asia to introduce this method of fabricating a prosthesis for below-knee amputations.

Prior to this milestone, the manufacturing and assembly of prostheses for SGH patients was supported by Tan Tock Seng Hospital. With its own dedicated Prosthesis & Orthotics (P&O) workshop, SGH is now able to provide comprehensive care through a full range of services, including the manufacturing of both prostheses and orthoses.

Multidisciplinary team approach

Why This Matters

The patient experience is also supported by a network of specialists — this includes prosthetists and orthotists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation physicians, and nursing staff.

This coordinated approach begins from patient assessment and goal setting, through socket fitting and alignment, to gait training and functional rehabilitation. It ensures that the patient not only has a well-fitting prosthesis, but also a holistic focus on mobility, confidence, and quick return to daily activities.

Opened in early 2023, the SGH P&O workshop remains a leader in cutting-edge prosthetics fitting and fabrication technology, exploring future advancements in 3D printing and assistive robotics to further enhance patient care.
