National Heart Centre Singapore’s Transplant Coordinator Joycelyn Tan describes facets of her job as an emotional roller coaster, but finds it extremely fulfilling despite the challenges.

For the past 13 years, Joycelyn has guided heart and lung transplant patients through every stage of their journey. From preparing families for surgery to supporting recovery, she serves as the vital link between patients and their multidisciplinary care team.
)
Not every transplant goes as planned. Joycelyn sometimes has to deliver heartbreaking news when a donor organ proves unsuitable or a patient's condition worsens. While emotionally challenging, she believes showing compassion—even sharing in a family's grief—is an important part of caring.
)
Despite long hours and being on call around the clock, Joycelyn finds purpose in every patient who receives a second chance. Whether witnessing a successful transplant or hearing heartfelt words of gratitude, these moments remind her why she continues to do the work she loves.
As a transplant coordinator, Joycelyn supports patients long before surgery and continues caring for them throughout recovery. She educates families, coordinates donor logistics and works closely with doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to ensure every patient receives holistic care.
The role is demanding, requiring her to be on call through the night and prepared for emotionally difficult conversations when circumstances change unexpectedly. Yet she remains committed because she has seen the life-changing impact transplantation can have.
For Joycelyn, the greatest reward is watching patients regain their health and independence. Seeing them return to everyday life after a successful transplant reminds her that every challenge, every sleepless night and every emotional moment is worthwhile.
