Healing Tunes shows how music can support both emotional wellbeing and better surgical experiences.

Healing Tunes, a music-based intervention programme by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), allows mothers undergoing Caesarean section to create personalised music playlists that accompany them before, during and after surgery.

Research by KKH found that music-based intervention significantly improved patients' emotional wellbeing during Caesarean sections. Anxiety scores were halved, while pain magnification fell by 35%, making surgery feel less daunting without relying on medication that could affect both mother and baby.

Choosing meaningful songs does more than ease anxiety. Music helps parents build emotional connections with their baby, express their identity and create lasting memories. It also strengthens communication between patients and healthcare teams, enabling more personalised support throughout the birth journey.

From operating theatres to wider care

Healing Tunes has been embraced by almost every patient undergoing Caesarean section at KKH since nurses in the Operating Theatres introduced the programme. Patient feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with satisfaction and recommendation rates exceeding 90%.

The programme addresses a common challenge in childbirth. In a study involving 108 patients, seven in 10 experienced anxiety before surgery. Many mothers remain awake during Caesarean sections under spinal anaesthesia, making them more vulnerable to anxiety, heightened pain perception and even longer-term risks such as persistent pain and postnatal depression.

Building on its success, Healing Tunes has since expanded to patients undergoing embryo transfer at the KKIVF Centre, with plans to extend the programme to even more patient groups in the future.
