These inventive solutions tackle everyday challenges faced by patients and healthcare workers, emerging from those who know patients’ needs best: nurses. As frontline caregivers, they are uniquely positioned to identify gaps in care and devise practical solutions.

This natural alignment between nursing and innovation was what led SingHealth to establish innovation as its sixth nursing specialist track in 2022. It formalised over a decade of efforts to address nursing manpower challenges, with nurses driving innovations that improve workflows and efficiency. Today, solutions like bedside tablets and RFID asset tracking enhance patient independence and streamline operations.

Great ideas thrives with the right support. SingHealth Nursing empowers nurse-innovators through training, cross-disciplinary partnerships and platforms that turn ideas into impact. From Innovation Councils to the annual Nursing Innovation Challenge, nurses receive the support and funding to develop practical solutions. Today, creations like the Drip Reader and Blue Mirror VR trainer are improving care and operations.
While some may argue that the chronic shortage of nursing professionals is detrimental to the spirit of innovation, there is another more optimistic perspective. “Innovation among nurses will only continue to grow and become more crucial because of the need for manpower augmentation,” says Ms Sook Thow Wong, Deputy Group Chief Nurse of SingHealth (Nursing Transformation), who points to the increased adoption of robotics and artificial intelligence as potential solutions for the future.
Even in the face of manpower constraints, innovation projects among nurses are often driven by a deeper calling, Ms Wong added. “Many of these solutions make an immediate impact on patient care. That, to me, is what make innovation purposeful, meaningful and interesting.”
