As healthcare evolves, so too has the nursing profession. Today, nurses contribute beyond direct patient care through research, technology, education and community care—improving health outcomes in ways that extend far beyond the bedside.

After years in renal, emergency and trauma care, Chin Wan Ong, Senior Nurse Manager (Nursing Informatics) at Sengkang General Hospital, found a new way to improve patient care through nursing informatics. From implementing electronic medical records to integrating clinical workflows, she has helped enhance nursing practice, care coordination and patient safety. Today, she champions AI and telehealth solutions that reduce administrative work, giving nurses more time with patients.

For Siti Hajar Binte Ninhadi, Nurse Clinician (Community Nurse) at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), nursing took on new meaning after experiencing life as both caregiver and patient. Following a serious motorcycle accident and years in neuroscience nursing, she transitioned to community nursing, supporting patients and caregivers in their own homes. Working closely with families reinforced her belief that empowering patients beyond hospital discharge is just as important as the care they receive in hospital.
While Joanne Anthony, Senior Nurse Educator, SGH, shapes the future nursing workforce through education and mentorship, PeiFen Poh, Nurse Clinician (Nurse Researcher, Children’s Intensive Care), KK Women's and Children's Hospital, advances nursing through research. Joanne supports students from their first clinical placements to professional practice, and PeiFen combines bedside care with research to improve outcomes for critically ill children. Together, their work demonstrates how nursing continues to evolve through lifelong learning, evidence-based practice and developing the next generation of nurses.
Whether improving digital healthcare systems, supporting patients in the community, advancing research or preparing future nurses, these four journeys reflect how the nursing profession continues to evolve. While their paths are different, they share a common purpose—to improve lives through compassion, innovation and continuous learning. Together, they show that nursing today offers far more than bedside care, with opportunities to make an impact across every stage of healthcare.
